cross track and the Andies that loom

I have taken a bit of a siesta since my last post due to my compuer being broken but I have a fresh laptop under my fingers and new typing motavation to inform the public about my life as a cyclist.

anyhoo...

Cross
I Have been dabbleing wih this cyclocross sport on a weekly basis as I will continue to through this weekend as it will be the last race of the year. Results have been hard to come by, a 6th at the cobbs hill cross was my best showing and a 12th in a 60 rider field have been my best. I've had my normal luck as I was in 3rd when my seatpost desided to snap in half in a cross race soulth of Buffalo not to long ago. Much cursing and throwing of my undeserving bike was the result but I'm over it.
I have found that cross is a completly differnt animal from road mtn biking or track(which comes later in this script) It requires power... noramly this is a plus for me but it requires a differnt kind of power that is differnt and probly requires you be on your cross bike more than twice a week. But it also requires you be in the front row off the start no matter what you have to in the front from the start or you loose. Take for example the rochester cross where I placed 12th last weekend I was in the front row when they desided to call the series leaders to the front I got bottled up and had to come back from a 30th place start wasting all of my energy and eventualy fading in the end...live and learn.

Track...

Yea I have been converted to a tracky in the last two weeks, i've scraped all the spare change beetween my seats to buy gas to haul myself up to the Forest city velodrome in London ontario to pull some g's on the 60 degree banking on the short but fast wooden velodrome north of the border. What an experiance it is to fly around at 50kph pulling 4 g's in the corners on my s-works langster...ah bliss.
The 1st week was a introductory school that is mandatory for all new to the velodrome. For good reason because the track is a very intimadating at 1st sight if I may say so but it is a realitivly easy task as long as youy maintain about 18 mph or more. After the school ended ther was an open rec sesion where I met Rob Good the owner of the track and a super nice guy who is truly devoted to promoting track cycling in London an abroad. He envited my to a 2 day school the next weekend and that is where my story continues.
Week 2 was a blast as It was a racing school which ment we went through all of the nessary steps of track racing from time trials to pacelining. I had some decent times in the flying lap and 500meter time trials even with marginal fitness at best. The school was on saturday night and sunday morning followed by lunch at the local boston pizza...
I'm definetly looking forward to racing up their in the coming weeks.

The andies!!!
Yes the andies as in the Peruvian mountain range Todd Jake and I are going to be treking through them on our mountain bikes in less than 20 days and I'm soo excited i cant wait to climb up to 5000 meters in elavation.

Thats my life

I'm a slacker I know, So heres Montreal Quebec and more...

Its been a while i know don't start throwing tomato's and other projectiles yet though I've been on the march the last month racing a ton and doing quite well. I raced the the coveted Montreal Quebec Classic to name part of my race activities since my last post...

La Classique Louis-Garneau
Montreal-Quebec

Montreal is a...a...ah how do I put it, Long race, at 155 miles including the 20k neutral section 252k without it is enough to drive any mortal nuts.
The race is a true classic starting next to Olympic stadium in downtown Montreal and having full rolling enclosure all the way to the finish next to the Louis-Garneau factory in Quebec City. The crew I was traveling with was truly priceless M. Luther, J. Skalski, Mike Mathis, Scott Dorfdawg, Jeff Zygo, Bill Mathis and Sam Jays Girlfriend provided enough laughs to keep my gut hurting for a while.
The race starts at a very early hour of 8 am with a 20k section of neutral riding at about 20 mph. Not speaking the language is definitely a barrier as we (mainly Luther) pulled out some serious power laughs as the race director barked off where we could "make a PP", the French weren't happy with us...lol. Once we were off racing the speed never let up 29 mph became softpedling in a hurry as we were consistently in the 32, 33 mph range for the whole of the first 2 hours. A bunch of attacks were flying off the front with no success until Micheal Luther himself attacked and was off for a good 10 miles before being caught by the Jet Fuel team who was all over the front. The next move was the move of the day 13 riders got off the front quite early and hung at about 30 seconds until a massive pileup happened int he field luckily not involving any Preferred Care riders. The gap then soared to 2 minuets. By the time we hit Trois Riviers the gap wa at 5 minuets where it remained steady for the rest of the day.
The steady cross wind that plagued us the whole day was popping riders one by one the entire time and I was actually dangling for dear life a couple of times in the crosswind furry. at about mile 110 the days ride was just starting to hit me as I was having bad patches and then feeling fine again a couple of minuets later. But miracously when we hit the climbs at about mile 130 I felt great climbing the 1/2 mile assents as the pack dwindled fast.
At about mile 140 I attacked with a Craylon/ Litespeed guy and a Trek Voltswagov rider and we were making great progress until the Litespeed guy started sprinting at every pull and riders started bridging across. the peleton was now down from about 80 to about 30 at the most. Mike Mathis and i kept attacking to keep the pressure on and it was we were still maintaining a 30mph pace after over 5 and a half hours of racing.
The last climb is feared by many as it falls at the 150 mile mark and is the toughest climb in the race. It stands only at 3/4ths of a mile but it kicks to 15% as my ibike power meter told me. So basically it sucks...having never ridden this race before I've only heard of its fury and location so i was looking for it. Mike took off before the climb hoping to get a little head start on climbing it. But it didn't work the second we hit the base a jittery joes guy attacked I was quickly on his wheel now in total delirium. My bid to get over the top with him ended with about 200 meters to go where I totally came unglued and went plummeting backwards through the field which was shattered.
Over the top there was 3 groups as far as i could see because I was in the 3rd and didn't look back... Mike and I managed to bridge to the 2nd group in time for the 1st pass of the factory with 500 meters to go I was tacked onto the back of this 15 rider group so I pegged it to get close to the front where I some how found the energy to sprint and almost win out of the group.
I ended up 34th overall, which i'm happy with considering there were 7 pro teams and it was a suicidal distance. The only thing that was left to do after the race was to deal with the pain of riding and eat tons and I mean tons of food, which happens to be my profession...

Until next time which happens to be Green Mountain since Thater has past and I've neglected to write about it...

Empire State Games; GOLD FEVER!

Yes yes the hard ride of the 10th of june was about to pay off as I sat on the starting ramp preparing to roll down into a 10 mile tunnel of pain also known as the Individule time trial ,clipped into my pedles and off I was crushing the first 5 miles in a mere 11 minuts before paying for my early efforts and fading to a 23:16 time at the final. The ITT was a bad event for the team as we were already handi capped with the lack of 2 riders as the rug was pulled from the Dansville duo of Cheyne and Jake who bolth had their issues of not finishing.
The searing heat and the omnious presence of 2 climbs per 12 mile lap inshured that the road race wasto bne a death march. and it was as Jake back from the depths of the cone hiting gods scored the early break that stuck 6 riders strong the break was to make it as we had no need to chase it down. mean while Chyeyne and I lit it up on the final couple acents of the climbs to try to go clear to the finish but the pack had no interest in letting us go anywhere as our acellarations only amounted to a couple 30 second advantages and a desimated field. As we all finished inside the field at the line.
A 28 mph crit was the last thing we wanted to do as we ate our regular 6:30 am breakfast but we pushed on as Jay and michal scored big for us getting 2nd and 4th. I personaly suffered like a dog and pulld it all together to manage a 5th in the final field sprint.
The final mental and physical blow came in the form of a 40 mile 4 man TTT we had a class team of youth with myself and Cheyne bolth pimping junior gears as Jake only 20 was a first times as well. The true experiance came in the shape of Jay Josyln who is a specialist at this event. We started at an alarming rate as we avged 31 mph for the 1st 7 miles enevidly catching out 2minut team that early. We pressed on and won the TTT with a time of 1:26 at a avg speed of 28+mph.

True astonishment rolled through the veins of every one as our true under dog team moved from 5th to 1st on the GC in one quantum leap claming our true dominence once again and proving that the "west coast" is "da place to be" for cyclists.

Empires was truely an awesome experiance that will never be forgotten and will definetly be duplicated by myself in the years to come.

Until next time...

COBBLESTONE

Yes it was today, the infamos Cobblestone criterium ,it is a 4th of July tradidtion in western new york cycling. A tradition that went bad this year as it was raining consistantly for the whole of the day. But the show went on, I was pretty tired opon my arival due to my setting up of the course the previous night/early morning at the horid hour of 12 midnight with Mr Jim Costello himself (who actually never went to bed).

I raced the Jr. Race and the cat 3/4 race today and bolth went well. The junior race was pretty similar to Rochester as I won from a early attack solo. But differed in that I realy didnt ride as fast this time to save a litte more energy, also the lack of fans along the road were a hampering on my solo speed for the duration of the race. (no spectators= ride only as fast as I need to to win).

The 3/4 race went well as I got into a 3rd lap attack with 2 others that was destined to stay away and we did. Myself M.Loranty(sp?) and Joe Halter rode away from the other hopefuls. With a few laps reamaining the cobble pro Halter hit the jets on the cobbles and rode Loranty off his wheel I came to the head of thigs and tryed to peg Halter back only to signal Mike to come through and he jumped. So I was the odd man out and finished a respectivly in 3rd on the day.

Thats all for now...yikes nationals is next week! The argh tt is next on the plate sunday.

Peace out

biggest win of career, another (real) win , and the pain of the Boston hills

Welcolm back been awhile since I've bloged it up on this old page of mine. The biggest win of my career as the title said infact didnt involve a single pedle stroke. The Bronchitious that plaged me for the past 2 months is GONE! hahahahah. Yes that means i'm back training like a normal cyclist instead of eating antibiotics and hacking up gren stuff. So RIP Bronchitios 4/07-6/07 :).
I have a solid 3 weks of training under me and I'm feeling better every day. Its been tough because all that I had fitness wize has deteriorated so with nationals in 2 weeks i'm playing super catch up to try to not get killed. I've raced a total of 10 times in the past 2 weeks to try to basically beat the fitness into myself. Tired legs are the result but a easy week and a half is to follow to atempt to "taper" for nationals.
I have just come off of a 3 day mini block of hill training down in the boston hill area 3+ hours a day for 3 days in the betrechory of those hills has been tough but I placed 3rd in the infamos West time trial up the 2 mile asent with a time of 7:14 just 6 seconds off the winning time.
The real win that i described came at the twilight criterium 2 weeks ago where I obliteratedf the junior field going from the gun and almost laping the field in the 45 minut crit Finish line pics are to folllow shortly.

Well thats all for now, see ya on the road...
Peace

More time off...

This is getting seriously old I'm sick of being sick...this strain of bronchitis that I have is clinging to me like a cheap suit. After Sunday's 50 mile death march the slight feelings of sickness returned so once again I will be taking some time off, This time I'm setting no date of return to the bike...oh wait I am setting a date and it is when I can ride without coughing green slime ever night and falling asleep an hour after I woke up every morning...

And that's the word
Ryan

Empires...

Empires was this weekend and It went great for only riding a couple days before the race after taking a whole week off the bike... it was in Boston with Wayne Jay and I attending. It included a 6 mile tt and a 50 mile Death march in the 85 degree heat.

TT went great Wayne showed his TT dominence getting a 2nd and I scored a 5th...Jay won the field sprint in the not trying time-trialest race over Ken Thomas.

The road race was a suffer fest(for me), flat out no other words could describe it better. Taking last week completely off and couch surfing seemed to help my flat power 10 fold but I now have to learn to climb hills again. The race was decided in the 1st two climbs as after the 1st climb the pack was down to 15. then down to about 11 after the 2nd one. I was chasing non stop after a group got away on the 1st accent of the rice rd climb...I recaught the tete de course group just in time to start the 3 mile accent of Brown rd...and only to make it up half the climb and get dropped. Anywho Cheyne Hoag won after a last lap attack Jay nabbed 2nd, Wayne finished in the 7th( I think) and I capped off the top 10.

Week off ,and the nightmare race that could have been

Sorry for the delay I've been nursing my wounds(and wallet) for the last week after the disaster of a race I did (or tryed to do) last weekend. It was to be a great weekend of racing under the sun of New Jerseys Sussex county. Well there wasnt much fun in the racing as Thursday after I pre reged of course the bronchitis that I thought I had fought off made a heralding return and screwed me over hard. I went to the doctor this past week and he put me on antibiotics and after a complete 8 days off the bike and using the medication I have been given I'm feeling a little better and hopefully will have a sickness free run-up to nationals and the month of July.

Next week is empire qualifiers so its kinda a big deciding factor of what I will be doing in the lader half of July due to the fact that If I don't get to 10 I wont be allowed to go to the Empire state games but I'm not worried just being sick free should catapult me into that.

Lets start the race report off on a positive note , I'm never doing a junior race again (with exception of nationals.). I raced, or attempted to race the big canam u-19 challenge down in New Jersey this weekend. It was a 2 day 3 stage deal with a TT a crit on sat and a 1.5 mile circuit race on sunday. My race began to go south about Thursday as I realized I was relapsing a bit on the sickness that hit me a couple of weeks ago...but to late I was signed up and going any ways.
The 8 k up hill tt went terrible ... my fault though...It was way to cold and just couldn't breath. Finished about a minute down.

The crit is where the real birds started to hit the fan when I was feeling quite all right narrowly missing a pream to the rider who actually won the race... It was easily the fastest crit I've ever done ...no lie we avged 26 and change ... But all hell broke loose when we were turning onto the front strait to start the bell lap and the rider infront of me, who apparently needs to attend a Handlebars bike repair school because his head set was loose and he turned the bars the wheel keep going strait so he crashed about 5 of us. Came out of it good though only a couple very small scrapes on my knees.

But the true wallet killer of the weekend was the circuit race when on the 3rd lap I was 3rd in line passing 2 riders on the right when the rider flat out rode into me and managed to get his handlebars into my rear wheel totally ruining my 5 race old carbon rear wheel taking about every spoke out of it and putting a huge dig in the rim to make it a total loss, before he smashed into the ground... I rode about 50 more meters and got off in the grass. The weekend basically was a complete nightmare but thats bike racing.

I'm glad BRISTOLs on your mind...

Bristol Bristol bristol was on my mind after awaking way to early (6;00) to a plate of Spigetti and numerous PB&j sandwiches on the 2 hour speed limit cracking drive to the Bristol mountail ski resort for a 75 mile trek through HELL. Hell as I call it is a 17 mile loop that we had to complete 4 times...easyer typed than actuly done as the loop contains a 1 mile climb to start the lap then an ascent over the renound 2.5 mile Egypt road climb to finish your lap in hell off. Nah in my opinion a flat crit is more hell than Egypt rd (hurts alot less though) as I'd rather race up a hill then race on a flat road.

The race started with an easy roll out and the pace remained group ride easy until the 1st ascent of Egypt. The pace was lifted and may cracked... This would be the case for the whole day but on the 1st 2 laps many riders were able to latch back on... But on the 3rd lap all hell broke loose as I easily made the stupidest move of my cycling career as I attacked at the bace of Egypt the adventual winner and tough guy of the day Cheyne Hoag bridged to me as we climbed past the half way point I gazed back opon the pack that was only 30 yards to the rear. Being the engegy conserver that I try to be I went back to the pack figuring we would be caught anyway. WRONG! Cheyne hit the top and was flat out gone I played my cards a little bad there as I unnoingly was surrounded by guys who were more woried about making up the climbs than actuly winning the race as the chase went nowhere. Well there went a chance at the win... So my trusty teammate Jeff and I went to work on demorilizing the remaining riders in the chase groupo. Several attacks and counters later and were were 5 riders strong going down the final decent of the back side of Bristol Mountain to the finish line... coming up to the line down the hill at speeds of 48+ mph i timed it a bit wrong and ended up getting 5th on the day with Jeff slotting in right behind me in 6th.

It was overall a good day of racing and Congrats to Cheyne on a great ride.

Peace out computer geeks

Jiminy Peak @ Marilla Weekend

I was a bad then good weekend that has past. Jiminy peak was on tray for the saturday as I traveled with Todd and Jeff to the far east of Massachusetts for a great day of racing.
The course was much better than last weeks "sprinter races" of Palmer/Sturbridge. Jiminy featured a great cross wind correlated with rollers and followed by 7 miles of 2% grade with a 1.5 mile 160 meter climb to the line. A great course for myself .
I raced the stacked Junior field at 35 riders. The race started with an early move on the 1st lap that got about 30 seconds... on the 2% section all hell broke loose as a massive pile up was caused as one rider after another hit the deck witch held me up and ultimately cost me the race as many riders used that as an opportunity to launch an attack and as I tried to chase back on I my as well have been with a bunch of senior citizens as no one was willing to take any kind of pull and when they did it was at about 19 mph which will get you no where fast. So with about 10 miles to go I nailed it and no one followed as I time trialed home for an 8th on the day which is not where I had wanted to finish at all.

MARILLA REPORT
I'm writing this report mainly for MR. Mesi who predicted this opon my arrival to the parking lot of the marilla Road race on the past Sunday.
It was a great day of racing with the biggest BBC turnout ever recorded with 70+ riders in attendance. The Marilla East course was the challenge of the day as a steady cross wind was in place to greatly decimate the field. I didnt make it easy on myself as I like aways in club races go from the zero kilometer mark. One other rider followed as I drove the break for 2.5 of the 5 laps gaining a max of over 1.5 mints. when I looked back to see fellow teammate Wayne Luther and another rider bridging I sat up to wait for Wayne when he just did the same and went back to the pack...so that move was shot as the pack was charging along and was within 30 seconds now i decided to go back and "rest", which entailed to chasing down the counter attacks. At the start of lap 3 a small 4 rider group went clear which I went after and made contact without any difficulty then then like clockwork sat up and I went right past them and off the fron of that group. Which caused a couple riders to latch on to me as more rides tried to bridge to the group. We finally settled with an 8 rider group. So we drove on and away from the dwindling main field. With 2 laps to go I nailed it and brought Jim Crowle (AG Edwards) with me as we worked off the front for the better part of the lap. before a now shrunk 4 rider chase group caught us.
On the final lap an attack of mine was countered by Steve Toorongian (reddoor) as I could now see everyone was tired as no one would chase as they all looked to me to close the gap.
I tempo ed along keeping the gap at a reasonable 10 seconds trying not to expend to much energy as I needed it for the final climb. On the final climb I ripped it and no one followed and I passed the breakaway rider and soloed to the win. I came in at over 3 and a half minuts to the good of the main field.

Total Domination at Bloomfield!

Preferred Care once again showed how strong we are as we won the race got third and 7th. Non of those spots were occupied by myself as I have inherited a bit of bronchitis this past week... I tried to race but exploded after 3 laps for the simple fact that I couldn't breath! But screw me; back to PC's total domination.
The very hilly Bloomfield course that would have definitely favored me greatly brought out our climbers in full force as a acceleration by our ever strong Wayne Luther on the 1st climb set us up well strategically as Wayne pulled out a 2 minute lead! The pace was on strong as a 3rd lap acceleration by Preferred Care rider Mike Mathis caused the deciding selection. Quickly on his wheel was our other great climber Paul Komanecky. The 5 man group powered on and away from the main field for the remaining 3 laps getting a in surmountable lead of over 5 minutes.
On the final lap Mathis unleashed a furious attack and heal a blistering pace as he rode home to win the Bloomfield classic by a gap of 2' 20" over second and 3rd place which was occupied by Paul Komanecky. Todd Scheske took out the sprint in the main peloton to score 7th.

BATTENKILL-ROUBAIX

What a weekend it was starting Friday afternoon at Handlebars Cycle company where I met fellow jr rider Dave Bisinius as we were heading to the Hell of the north together...a "short" 6 hour drive put us into Saratoga Springs out residence for the night...
Opon arival it was a shure thing that this is the biggest event that has ever happened in Salem, which makes my home town of Pendleton look urban.
Junior 15-18 was my challenge for the day and there was an awesome 30 rider turnout for the 60 mile point to point race... The race was a brutal one, with some nasty climbing through some on the most awesome scenery I've ever raced in. The 1st dirt climb was so steep that I was like at 30 rpm in my 25 as the field absolutely shredded behind me, after the 1st two climbs the field was down to a core 12 man group with a rider or two popping on every accent we did...
There was a bit of confusion on where the finishline was beause ther was about a 1 mile strait run in and no banner on the road. . With about 300 M no one knew where the line was until we heard the bell and this huge kid that had been dropped over every climb jumped and got like 5 bike lengths the before I responded I jumped at 250 and almost caught him as I nailed 2nd by at least 6 bike lengths... Over all a fun race perfectly suited for me the definitely a good start to the season.

Ciao for now

Orange Domination!

As if it was never here March has since passed and along with it another exciting Spring Giro searon (sob sob)...The good news is the Orange armada is absolutely flying with sprinters Todd Scheske and Jay Skalski dominating every field sprint that came forth in the 4 week 8 race series...with the last week of racing comes my last GIRO REPORT!

Sunday...Rochester
The race started late for me as I waited until I rode 50 meters from the start corner to launch my fury instead of my usual clip in and sprint. The attack went no where as after 4 weeks all are keen to my disapearing act I preform at the beginning of a race...but like the true attack freak that I am, I was caught went to the back of the pack for 200 meters then went forth again on the next hill to try to dislodge myself from the pack. I must have forgotten my invisible cloak that Robbie Mcewen granted me as I was once again caught and then countered by ever strong John Rhoden(JW dundees) but like true pirates that we are Jason and Mike were quick on his wheel quickly followed by a few others as all hell broke loose...LITERLY!
As we crested the thruway overpass and descended onto the Mendon loop we met a wall of water that quickly diminished any thought of being dry for the next 50 miles the rain as it was came down as hard as imaginably possible for a good 15 miles as the Mathis/Skalski driven break powered away to a gap exceding 30 seconds...realizing our teammates were the chosen ones, that would ultimately win the day Todd, Jeff, Chris and I took up the job of making the main pack SUFFFEEERRR(insert evil grin here). And suffer they did ,knowing we were at no risk of catching the breakaway we drove the pace to insure the now soggy pack would most definitely be going to beg early tonight. Pacing along at consistent 30+ MPH speeds the pack was in splinter mode. At as everyone suffered thoroughly I pulled through at 31...looked back to find the face of pain opon the rider behind me, I said screw as I it dropped my Tarmac into the 12 and ratcheted the pace up to 37 for a good half mile to prolong the pain for a while.
But then problem arose as armada captain Scheske flatted and even with the quick wheel donation off Jeff, Todd couldn't regain the main pack as it was now screaming along. Unfortunately I didn't realize Todd had flatted as I could have helped him back into the pack.
...The final lap of the Mendon loop was on as I was now isolated without team help in a Dundees/FM vista controlled pack...after a hard solo chase of a Vista rider, JW dundees rider Cheyne Hoag countered and it was 2nd verse same as the 1st as the lazy 15 rider pack sat there like it was a group ride. I was having none of this though, I was still tired from the 1st chase but I soldiered on after Hoag after a few hard pulls and yells at other wheel suckers I took the last pull and caught the now 3 rider group with 500 meters to go... Panic ensued as I realized I had only 300 meters to rest as a 200 meter uphill sprint was still on my plate..ripping down the final strait I followed the wheels of early jumpers and was on a slowing wheel as a Yellow rider came to my right blocking me in as I now came around the slowing rider and had not enough tarmac to get my Tarmac SL over the line to win the main field sprint, and ended up 2nd.

Good news on the day is that up the road a double pronged Skalski/Mathis attack sprung Mike to the win with Jason finishing a close 2nd. as Preferred Care swept bolth days of the last 2 weeks of the Giro racing action.

Its late and my type happy fingers hurt, so I will follow up with Saturdays report tomorrow...Check back in soon...
Ciao for now

Preferred Care Sweeps Giro rounds 3 and 4!

Oh yea it is true the Orange Armada is rolling strong as we swept bolth days on the annual spring Giro series this past weekend!
As you have probably already read about my triumph defeat due to a wheel detonation on Saturday I wont comment on the despair I experienced today as my so called hardcase tires let me down leaving me changing a tube with 5 miles to go.
Enough of that disappointing talk...and back to PC's domination...
As the race rolled out with the biggest field to date at roughly 40 strong and the "Orange Armada" was sailing with 7 riders...the attacks were coming thick and fast as it seamed everyone wanted to be in the early move due to there recent sucess rate. But it was the attack of Preferred Care rider Jason Skalski that was the move to watch. With many of the big teams represented it was set to be the move that would make it... but A flat by MR Steve Burget(JW Dundees) caused the beer team to throw some more hops and barley on the fire and attempt to take down the ever tough Skalski driven break. Also there to assist them was the fermenting Garapow led Shickluna Team... Well try as they may 25 seconds were as close as they came to the catch. Many yawns were heard from my fellow Orange teammates as we were all chalking this up as "Good tempo Work" as Jason was certain to win.
...And as predicted Mr Skalski used his super speed to out wit and out ride his fellow breakaway compadres winning Preferred Care our 2nd race in two days.
With the giros nearing close Armada leader Todd Scheske has a narrow lead as we float the orange ships into the final week of Giro action and then it is off to the first big goal of the season...Good Friday.

Giro Round 3

With the cancellation of last weeks races and the not so warm weather experienced in the past weeks round 3 of the giros went off with a bang... literally as I picked up right where I left off 2 weeks ago. And that is off the front, just as we rounded the first corner I jumped clear after only a few seconds I was joined by 2 others including Preferred Care's Mike Mathis fresh off his spring training in Spain and also Rob Dietrik (JW Dundees). Using the hilly nature of the Rochester course to our advantage we powered away and out of sight of the main field. A strong head and cross wind was our only adversary for the first 10 miles of the race as it proved too much for the Dundees rider.
Tete de Course we were at over 1:15 as Mike and myself were alone against the whole of the field as we crested the half portion of the big loop. With the wind in our favor we now raced along the rollers at speeds averaging 30 mph...
But disaster struck as an overzealous(to state it nicely)motorist blared the horn as we were about to make the turn onto the Mendon loop... brakes were applied making Mike collied with myself sending him to the ground... after a quick hesitation I was off alone now as Mike was waiting for the main pack...
The thoughts of pain were now a reality as I was doing the time trial of my life to try to maintain my lead for the remaining 12 very hilly miles I set the pace at 25 and was holding it very well when the wheels came off(almost literally)...
With the end within 3 miles and the thoughts of a solo victory streaming through my head, on the ascent of the hill just before Pond rd, I proved myself to strong for my own wheels as I snapped a spoke sending it into the derailer and into my very precious carbon frame. I was left with no other option than to dismount and fix the ailing wheel. The lead now down to a measly 15 seconds I was back off I a fit of adrenalin drivin rage that only lasted about half a mile as the rhythm had been lost and the legs were fried...
But I did not give up as I was caught by the peloton monster as I tried another few surges which lasted no longer than 100 meters before settling back into in the main pack to my dismay.

But it was not all a loss as the Orange Armada rolled into the final strait master sprinter Todd Scheske after much bumping took the win in the only mass field sprint of this Giro season.

Cancelled!

3/18 Roch GIRO CANCELED!!! due to fresh morning snow, more predicted lake bands and 30mph winds... we will resume next week... maybe upper 50s?? TS

Ah this was the scene as mother nature, as I predicted , staked clam to both Giro's. All in all it was not a total loss as a 3 hour ride in sunny (but cold!) East Aurora was on the table for Sunday.

The day started well as I arrived and made shore I had to ride for a while as I securely locked my keys into my Truck. As the group rolled up the jokes were flying and we were off. Many sizable hills were attacked including a very painful assault on the Warner rd. climb of about 3 miles as Preferred Care Rider Jason Skalski Drove the pace. The big and only race of the day was for the all so important Town line sprint competition which was a dead tie between myself and Mr. Kevin Mahoney(JW Dundees) But since I am the writer of this post I self proclaim myself the winner!

Giro Week 1:

Well we are now in full Giro mode as the annual Giro Della Primavera series kicked off this past weekend.

Sunday March 11th Start Handlebars Cycle company

The day went very well, following a quick wheel change thanks to my dad driving me a new one from me casa (roughly 5 miles away) we were off... Adam Garlapow(Shickluna) was already calling out for helpers for his "f5 tornado" attack that he launched from the second we rolled off the bridge... I was quickly on his wheel along with the very fast Kevin Mahoney(JW Dundees), as this would be the last we saw of the main field. After the tornado was reduced to a gentle breeze Garlapow's teammate Jay Josyln(Shickluna) bridged the now 25 second gap... I drove on at a "Nyealating*"(thanks Chris) 27 mph for the whole of the first 2 of 3 laps... after I took a long pull the ever strong Josyln jumped our trio and after some valiant efforts to close the gap Jay was gone... Kevin and I pressed on anyway knowing we had a sizable lead at this point. After that 3riders including Preferred Care rider Todd Scheske, had bridged the gap to us for the remaining third of the race. With some welcomed assistance we soldiered on...

With the line quickly approaching attacks were coming thick and fast from the other breakaway riders, as I was going with all the attacks to glue the field together for Todd to sprint... 500 meters from the line I countered an attack and drove on at speeds reaching 33 mph for the line in an attempt to grab second place. I had a good gap but as another rider went for the pack sprint Scheske kicked and ended up finishing wheel in wheel on the line with me. After quick review between the two of us the place was given to Todd and I ended up 3rd on the day, with a final gap on the main field of over 3 minutes adrift.

Final results: avg speed 24.5 mph

1st Jay Josyln

Giros Giros Giros!!

The Spring giro season is now upon us, watch for the Orange armada to be rolling in force as we attack the Rochester and Buffalo cycling races... The only notable riders that will be missing from the Preferred Care line up are Teammates Mike Mathis who is currently training in Mallorca Spain. Also on the missing list will be Jason Sakski and Wayne Luther who are in Tuscon AZ for a 10 days of training in the hills. The weather looks to be very favorable for this time of year, it will be a certain test of the legs as this will be the start of what should be a fantastic season. Look for my post giro reports and results throughout the month of march!

Ciao for now

Good Friday Course Preview

I went course scouting today in the great white north of Canada to ride the Good Friday course on which I will race April 9th. The course varies from very hilly at the beginning of the lap to very flat at the end of the lap with a 12% uphill finish to top off a days worth of racing. The course (which happens to be less than a mile from my grandparents house) favors me well as I am strong at accelerating up very steep grades. A solid 4 hour ride in the hills above Hamilton left me nothing more to do than raid my grandma's fridge for anything that wasn't moving, Cant wait to race...
Ciao for now... until next time
Ryan

Team Meeting:

The official Preferred Care Cycling Team meeting went off with out a hitch, although I did get lost on the way there which is not such a good thing considering that the Giro series starts about 2 blocks from there next week (note to self:its the 390 not the 490). Race stories and tactics were shared late into the night as we sat in our cool private room at Mario steak house. Dinner was great, and Chris managed to keep his plate clear of any meat :) as we jabbered about the season ahead and endless power files from the winter training sessions of the now past. Racing is a week away and everyone , including my self cant wait to stomp down on the pave for another year.

Thanks for reading
